Wightman (Joseph M.) is born in Boston.

October 19, 1812

The son of English immigrants, Joseph Wightman apprentices to a machinist, then becomes a successful manufacturer of scientific and medical instruments. He is elected to the Boston School Committee in 1850, serves on the Board of Aldermen, and as mayor of Boston (1861-62). Wightman dies on January 25, 1885.
